People tended to define Joe by his superb education, outstanding competence, and enthusiasm for problem-solving. We, too, often saw him that way—the husband and father who made us all feel safe. It made his dementia all the sadder.

yes, this one was tough ... life can sometimes seem particularly cruel, and losing what once was can be so much harder than never having known it in the first place ... thankfully you have all those "before" years to keep in your memory

Yes, very sad when the person is still there, and yet those things that make them Them become lost to you, and to them.
you have had some truly hard blows from life and yet your posts are more often than not, uplifting and trimmed with humour. i really really admire that.
