Howard wore jeans to work and was a fun boss. Still, he was enough of a patriarch so that I was startled to be asked, on our way out the door following a business dinner, “Why do women fake orgasms?”

I'd love to know what you told him.
it depends on how he asked ... it might have been meant as a compliment, as in -- he actually thought you'd be able to finally explain something to him that kept him puzzled
or he could have just been a letch

Well, he sounded, as BB suggested, as though he had a sincere interest in the question. So I gave him a serious answer. Also, I was too surprised to do otherwise. :-)
