I wrote to him in 1970, describing how my stepdaughters and I released turtles from the murky confines of pet shop tanks, and asked, What can I do to help animals? He wrote back four pages in longhand, telling me.

I had to look him up, and found him in Wikipedia, wearing an atrocious red jacket, but posing with his cat, Polar Bear. I saw how many books he'd written for his cat, and forgave him the jacket.
LOL...I know that picture. Connected to Christmas, I believe. Did you learn that originally he achieved fame as a social critic? He ended up doing great things for animals. His Fund for Animals lives on.
Susan, I ussed to do the same things...I would take turtles from pet shops and release them. Sometimes I even paid for them. :))
